The Dane County Farmers' Market (Madison, WI) does start much earlier and end later than many markets elsewhere...it is a blessing for many local growers (cold market mornings notwithstanding!) In addition, the Market has recently become a year-round market with various in-door locations from mid November to April. Rules that prohibit re-selling are in place year-round. The winter markets feature storage crops, hoophouse crops, processed products, dried flowers, honey, syrup, etc. As to how growers made this happen: the farmers are in charge of the Market and have simply made this happen. There is also very strong support for the market in the city...and not just from regular patrons. The market has done surveys that document the economic impact of the market (how many dollars patrons of the market also spend at other local businesses) and this goes a long way in promoting political/civic support for the market and PRIDE in the market (one of the largest in the country). Somewhere around 20,000 people attend the market on an average Saturday (assuming good weather) and each spends around $20 at the market. The winter markets are currently MUCH smaller (in part due to the lack of a good, consistent location). To learn more about the market, see: http://www.madfarmmkt.org/
