One year I planted Korean or Kobe lespedeza between rows of sweet corn.  This legume is a summer annual, and I planted it after cultivating the corn and when it was about 1 foot high.  I don't remember what planting rate I used, but it was thick and very few weeds grew through it.  We were in zone 6, but it is now zone 7.
