By the
way, does anyone in the Southern States (FL, TX, AL, GA, LA, OK, etc.) have any
luck growing cooler weather crops during the summer monthsI use Willhite's for
most of my Southern crops, but it would be really great to be able to grow
something besides melons, black-eyed peas & okra in August! What is
wrong with melons, black-eyed peas and okra? You also have pintos, tomatoes, kidney beans, some kinds of
turnip greens (7 top if you keep covered) but as far as lettuce there is still
some growing in my garden that was from a mixed mescaline mix the small red bib
type. The rest has gone to seed. Rocket will still grow and some types of arugala.
My arugala that was the second planting is still going strong even though the
Mexican spotted betel is all over it. Zucchinis and yellow squash you still
have time to get a crop in but they will really have to be kept wet to make it
in July and August. The okra is just now starting to come out and I will
probably plant some more and I pretty sure you have time to get a crop of the real sweet corn in. Cucumbers are
going crazy right now and they can still be planted along with some of the
super hot peppers that are thin skinned as they and the tamatillos will survive
the heat. Try some lentils for a change as the heat likes them. Just about all
the collard greens feed some other critter this year maybe because of all the
unusual rain patterns. Bob C |
