Hello, I see there is a bunch of people talking about insurance. Is there
a clear definitive place to go to discuss this topic? I mean this isn't
like car insurance where in my state (New York) there are legal minimum
requirements. Homeowner's insurance is required by the bank. Pretty
straight forward. But a lot of other coverages are quite vague. Is it just
a general rule that most business activities need to be covered by
insurance? I produce a lot of firewood, but I have heard that I should have
a liability policy if I enter someone else's woods. I am aware of the
dangers of the woods and working with a chain saw and so if I hurt myself it
is my own fault. The woods in our area are not prone to forest fires, so
that is not much of a concern. I cut up the leftover tops from hardwood
logging, so I am not even dropping trees. The loggers carry insurance
because of the machines they use and the fact they are dropping trees. A
logger near me had an accident recently where he dropped a tree and didn't
see power/telephone lines run on poles through one part of the woods. The
tree broke the lines, which unbalanced the poles and the tension in the
lines took out four of the poles. The logger had to pull the lineman's
truck out into the woods with his skidder to fix the lines.
Where should one find out about insurance, without asking the insurance
agents what is needed?
