(This is my first post. Hope I didn't blow it with the wrong format, etc.)
I am so sick of tilling and weeding I bought a hundred bales of hay. I
mulch like crazy everywhere I don't want weeds. The worms love it and it
keeps me clean and dry when I have to harvest. Between the rows I put down
some landscape fabric initially to make sure the grass died, but I'm not
sure that was necessary. The trick is to get the hay thick enough. This
year I "planted" potatoes right on the top of sod and mulched with 12" of
hay, no tilling, no nothing. So far so good.
It cost me $200 but I'm only one person and I simply don't have the time
for weeding and tilling new ground. The hay and worms do it for me.
A previous post mentioned slug problems. I have almost zero slug damage.
I don't know why that is though.

In response to:
I am tired of hoeing between plants by hand. It's wearing me out. I am
thinking of getting one of those small tillers like a Mantis or
something similar.
