Marie,
Have you tried a scuffle hoe? Johnny's has really
good ones, made by Glaser, in 3 widths. They are
used with a back and forth action, just below the soil
surface. It takes less energy than a regular hoe, and
gives better results. The blades are replaceable when
you wear them out! You can buy just the head. Maybe
your nice yellow fiberglass handle will fit!!
A second possibility, which I have not tried but
would love, is a wheel hoe, such as the Valley Oak
model. They have blades similar to the scuffle hoe, or
can be fitted with a range of other blades and
cultivators. And you can still hear the birds sing.
