On a related note: I've germinated beet seeds here in our fierce August heat without trouble. But the problem isn't germinating the seed -- the seed come up just fine. The problem is that somehow 99% of the beet seedlings damp off/rot within a few weeks of emergence. Still haven't figured out how to deal with this, except that if we want to have beets as a fall crop, then we need to plant them earlier (by June), and just let them get bigger and gnarlier than usual...
