In common with one or two of the "nubbies", I heard about Market-Farming in
Johnny's most recent email newsletter. Respectively, my wife and I raise
poultry and garden (veggies, fruits and nuts) in southeastern Vermont
(Weathersfield), jokingly located perhaps 400 feet south of zone 4 (as if on
cue, our coldest temperature this winter was -19F). I am not yet a market
gardener/farmer, merely a backyard organic "wannabe" whose garden expands
every year. It is still small scale but we are self sufficient in turkeys,
chicken, dried tomatoes, potatoes and garlic (also hot peppers, chard, mint
and horseradish, but who cares!). I have successfully grown hardy kiwi for
12-15 years, and hardy cacti (ie outside) for 9-10 years.Someday I may grow
for cash but since it is still a hobby (albeit totally consuming), I have
given away excess to family and some friends rather than sell extras to the
local coop, so as not to compete with the real farmers. My interest in this
list is mostly to learn.
