Allan: I make my own cubes .. .. if I remember to plan ahead enough. I
don't keep the drain open; as the ice melts it leaves a nice layer of cold
water. With lettuce I "burned " it once by letting the ice contact the
produce, but spinach and radishes do fine. I'm finding I'm happier with
putting a layer between the produce and the ice- hate to take a chance on
freezing it. The layer I've used most often is a plastic bag -- all the
lettuce, radishes, squash, etc go into a large plastic bag and sit on top
of, or next to the ice, depending on how hardy they are. I find that a
couple or three ice cube trays per cooler are enough. I just got some
burlap bags, and may try putting ice on the bottom of the cooler, cover with
the burlap then the produce.

Good luck.
