This will be my first year rolling up sides and using shade on a hoophouse.
I have been assuming that if I rolled the sides up to the shoulder and put on shade cloth and removed the doors and the end plastic that I essentially would have a shade house and could grow salad mix and other 'shade loving vegetables' under it.
Now I am hearing that houses retain a lot of heat after they are rolled up and that lettuce probably won't grow well under a rolled up hoophouse, even with plastic installed.
What has your experience been?

My name is Rose. I live in central New York. I actually LIVE in a
hoophouse! Yes, I know. Long story.
Suffice it to say, you can roll up the sides and put all the shade cloth you
want, but unless you're living ON the floor, there is still going to be a
layer of heat sitting above your head looking for a way out.
When I actually used this as a greenhouse, the plants did well, but I had
fans suspended above and fans at each gable end, as well as the sides rolled
up. The key - if there is no peak vent - is air movement, especially
putting a fan on the floor to push the cooler air up.
