Forgive me for preaching, but we need to remember something before we
despair too much: If we ate our fill today and have a bed to sleep in
tonight and nobody's shooting at us, we're better off than a big chunk of
the earth's people. If we have found purposeful work as well, we are
incredibly blessed. Most of us live in a country so rich that obesity is a
problem even among the poor. (That's a problem most nations would love to
have!)
I make my main living reporting the news and thus see a generous and
self-sustaining supply of injustice and greed and stupidity and just plain
cussedness. As we discuss problems and struggles, though, it helps our
individual and collective blood pressure if we toss in some gratitude from
time to time.
Down from the soapbox, now.
