Nan,
Your take on Bonemeal is correct. However, keep in
mind that if Bonemeal is applied it will be utilized by the crop within the
growing season. I will usually recommend Soft or Black Rock Phosphate
where Phosphorus is low and a soil test shows low Calcium as well. The
Rock Phosphates contain anywhere from 41% to 48% Calcium. Often times when
I recommend the Rock Phosphates, I will not recommend Lime because of the amount
of Calcium contained in them. In addition, Gypsum is an excellent source
of Calcium. I will recommend Gypsum when (1) the pH is above 6.2 and (2)
if it is early in the growing season. Otherwise, I will recommend a high
Calcium Lime source.
