If you use standard limestone millings it will come as a mixture of very
fine material and gritty particles that are much larger. Particle size will
influence how quickly the lime will influence soil pH. The finer the product
the quicker the soil reaction. The grittier the material the slower it
reacts. Usually it takes several months before the lime has a big impact on
pH so if you can do it well before you need the impact it's better.

Applying it takes equipment that is prepared to handle it. Some fertilizer
trucks can spread but some cannot. Look for someone who applies it routinely
and price out the application. It's not easy to spread lime over acreage
without the right equipment.
