Bill's points are very good points. It really doesn't matter if you set
your hours from 7AM - 12 or 10AM - 5, it is consistency that is important in
bringing back customers and in bringing customers who know when you are
open.
This makes me think about our local 'health food' store. They aren't open
on Sundays or after 5 during the week. I guess they think they are doing OK
but I can never get there during the growing season and the marketing
season - for sure. I wrote and asked for Sunday hours or evening hours but
they seem to be sure they don't need it.
Well, guess what? Another health food store opened up with better hours for
me and guess where I go now?
In addition to this point about hours, consistency is also important in who
is at the market. We decided this year not to send applications to members
who didn't show up for the majority of markets. We had members who bailed
on us to go sell at a variety of town festivals during the summer and this
was very disappointing to customers. Good for those of us who were there
but not a appeal for the ongoing market.
I do think that farmers' markets need to take a customer perspective. Yes,
there are those people out there who will show up no matter what. On the
other hand, I would like to broaden our customer base to younger people,
families, singles, etc. I don't really care why they come to buy. I just
want more people to come and buy.
One of our vendors is working on a customer survey for this year. I have
seen some other farmers' market surveys. Anyone ever done one or seen one?
