I think everyone understands the need to time markets to attract
customers. But, the timing has to be balanced to attract farmers. A
farmer, especially a small farmer doing his own selling, can not spend
all day every day selling at markets. In our area, Saturday mornings
are prime market times; within forty miles, I have five to choose from,
though two of those are peddler markets. Newly formed markets in this
area must choose some other day if they hope to attract legitimate
farmers.

Here in Central Texas, it is foolhardy to attempt to operate an outdoor
summer market in the middle part of the day. Daily high temperatures
usually reach 100 deg every day for several weeks. Markets that operate
past noon are miserable. That leaves us mornings and late afternoons,
each with no more than about three tolerable hours. Mad dogs and
Englishmen, you know.
