Hi Jill,As with many things that we did when we get older we say to ourselves "how on earth did I manage that". And we don't have an answer, it just happened.
I agree with you about the garden being our thing and not their's that is so true, and our love for it cannot be forced upon others. But for me it is there to share with them if they are open to it.
I also agree with you about the fact that the garden does feed all. Last year I paid the kids a quarter for every time they helped a customer carry the produce to the car and for getting boxes and bags from the shed for me. My 4 year old bought a BIG water gun and my 6 year old is saving to buy an AWESOME bike. I am hoping that this method of involvment will allow the kids to grow up with the knowledge that helping is important and that I will treat them fairly by allowing them a wage the same as any other employee.
As they get older if they have interest in making an income from the farm I will have to get the message across to them that when they receive a fair wage their labour must amount to a profit for the farm - the same as any other employee. It could be a touchy situation, depends on how they grow as individuals. Jacqueline

Jacqueline and Sue,
I admire you both for your approach to the garden with your children.
Mine are 17, 15 and 12, and so I require help occasionally, but not much -
it is my thing, not theirs. This year I may require a bit more, though, as
we all eat from it. Jacqueline - I am in awe of your working 5 acres and
having such small children. How do you do it?
Jill
