Sue, thanks so much for that hay bales idea - I know my boys well enough to know that they would love it. Do you know the name of the book? I've looked at some kids and gardening books, but found them to work only for short term - just like the kids attention span - short term! unless of course they are doing something they love.

Jacqueline,
I had a book about kids gardens about sunflower houses and bean teepees that was so
cute. It had little projects that kids can do. In reality I only got to a very few
projects like that for the kids because the big garden demanded so much time but it gave
them something to call their own (until the weeds took over!!).
Do you have access to hay bales? I wondered if you could make a play house or fort
out of hay bales that would give your little one a place to play that is somewhat
confined when you need them to be in one spot. I know my toddlers always wanted to be
underfoot or into something when I was in the garden. They loved to play with running
water. We have plenty of water so I didn't have to worry about letting the hose run. I
also hired a mother's helper to take my kids a couple times a week so I could get some
concentrated work done. I bet there are some families that would be willing to trade
babysitting for veggies.
I tried to keep to a set schedule so the kids knew how long we would be in the
garden. Its hard because sometimes I needed to be in there forever! I think the person
who said you 'just do it' and look back and wonder how?? I get myself in trouble
looking too far ahead too. I imagine all kinds of problems that don't materialize and
then have new ones I couldn't imagine so even with all my planning it takes on a life of
its own as we get into the season. You sound like you are doing great- you should give
us some advice!!
Sue
