I helped a neighbor in Cincinnati build a passive solar greenhouse (lean-to)
on the side
of his house, maybe 20 years ago. I worked as a manager of the food co-op
and saved the
rectangular metal cans that cashews came in- about 12" square by 24" tall.
He painted
these flat black, filled with water and stacked them on part of the back wall
of the
greenhouse.
They worked really well- he had tomato plants survive and produce in -20
weather. But
just the ones right next to the cans. This probably worked because he had
"cells" of
water storage instead of 30 to 55 gal. drums- thermal layering may not be an
issue in
cells- and he had the long dimension exposed to direct sunlight.
