I tried to "heat" a 10x40 coldframe using 55 gallon drums painted black. I
had them lined up down the center of the frame. The drums got very hot on
the top...and that was it. ASPI located in SE Ky has a fact sheet out on
using black painted drums for heat retention. They had a significant
problem with thermal layering and could only solve it by circulating the
water through the drums. I think when you compare size of the mass vs heat
gain vs how much area you are taking up in a cold frame, it is not worth
doing. Now I'm sure there is someone out there who is doing it very
successfully....has to be!!!
