I use a 7 ft high 9 strand "hot rope" electric fence, which includes 2
strands of highly visible "hot tape", which is about 5/8" wide. In the
summer the soil dries out completely (Northern California), so I wire
the fence "pos-neg", which means every other strand is grounded instead
of hot. To get through the fence a deer (or racoon) must touch a hot
wire and a grounded wire. Even with dry soil, they get a shock this way.
I've never had a deer get in in 5 years. I highly recommend Premier
Electric Fence Systems. Their catalog is very informative, and their
products are excellent. e-mail info AT premier1supplies.com
Good luck- Peter
