"The End of Agriculture in the American Portfolio" by Steven Blank (ISBN:
1567201652) discusses whether agriculture will exist in the US in the near
future. His economic food chain model puts the US at the top as an
Information Producing entity using capital & management. He says we should
use our $ to purchase food abroad, not invest in agriculture. "It is too
expensive & the necessary resources are far less expensive in other
countries".
An interesting viewpoint that totally ignores the fact that things are not
endlessly rosy, ever spiraling upward. He also does not address what to do
with the hundreds of thousands of workers directly & indirectly involved in
agriculture. (Especially since that last "retraining" episode to move
everyone into computers in the 1980s went so well.)
More interesting than the book is the fact this train of thought actually
became a book.
