We use a commercial seed starting mix - fine for seeding, a coarser mix for
potting up. We add a small amount of composted, granulated chicken manure
to the mix - about 1 cup per 1.5 cu.ft. This amount of nutrients gets the
seedling up and going, and lasts about 6 weeks. We also use a liquid kelp
about twice during the transplant growing period. If because of weather we
have to hold transplants longer, we'll use kelp about once a week. If we
have time (and often we don't during the heaviest transplant periods), we
use a concrete mixing tub to soak the flats before transplant. two will fit
in the tub and it assures they are well hydrated, and have a little boost as
they go in the soil. Two soak as two are transplanted, then they are
rotated out.
