John,
You're right on topic. This is exactly why we started this list.
I use field fence cages, about 2 feet in diameter, for my peppers ( they
top the cage by the end of the season) and my early determinate tomatoes.
My heirlooms are just too darn big for this approach.
For heirlooms, we use 8 foot sections of easy pull conduit, 4 feet apart
dropped into a 2 foot deep pilot hole. We plant one tomato at each pole
and one in the middle, then we do that labor-intensive basket weave with
untreated sisal. We weave 4-6 poles at a time. This is great work day
stuff if you have a CSA.
If you're small enough, or have access to a lot of field fencing scraps, it
might be possible to stack field fence cages one on top of the other using
conduit or a 2x2 for support. It's a trade-off between capital investment
and labor. Of course, there's always the labor to set-up and take down any
system.
