Good thinking, but I --think-- it's o.k.  It --creates-- tables, but fails to populate them.  Unfortunately, the installation scripts appear to suppress error messages, thus one cannot easily see where the error occurs. 

I did also try stepping through the include files and adding:

  echo "foo";
  exit();

...to see how far it took me.  That failed at the point where the "populate_system_options" function attempted to do an INSERT on the "options" table.

The Wordpress support forums' thread about Zend issues also indicated that some SQL queries were corrupted by this problem, so that may well be affecting me here.  I'm waiting for permission from the server owner to upgrade Zend, then I will proceed and let you know what happens.
