Have you tried compost as a heat source?  I'm curious how that works.

I think we have Elliot's book around here somewhere.  It looked too complicated when I was getting started.  I'll have to look for it.

I should probably state that I'm a complete tyro gardener.  Only had them four of the last five years, I think,  Maybe 5/6.  We retired up here, I was a mechanic, somewhat crippled up now.  Never gardened before that.

Mostly I've been concentrating on making soil.  It's a little threadbare up here.  I've managed to get an acre or so in hay (sorta) to use for compost and manure from the chickens supplemented with the occasional load of horse poop.  I've got quite a bit of garden space started of varying productivities.  Had to clear it and level it.
I've got lots of rocks if anyone needs some.  :o)

Anyway, I've had a few good crops of this or that, even grew tobacco one year.  Mostly we like spinach and beat greens.  DW likes her peas.
I've got a small hugel I have high hopes for this year.  Eventually, I hope to grow most of our feed and hunt the meat.  Steep curve, seems like.

Fred..
