Hi Mitch...
chickenfeed. Well, chickens are just somewhat modified
velociraptors. However, they are somewhat constrained
velociraptors! they are voracious omnivores. Means, we have to read
labels. Purina is a rather suspect maker of foods etc., even though they
have a huge presence.
And, if other stuff doesn't eat what you or chickens eat, probably not such
a good thing. Basically, for a daily feed, (we have egg chickens, not
meat) some brand with the highest level of protein needs to be used.
Modified Velociraptors need lots of protein; lots of calcium and
vitamins. If you need it, they do too. I talked a lot with our
local poultry rep from Michigan State extention. I learned about selecting
the highest protein food. I learned too that that is not enough, and to
supplement with soybean meal...approximately 1/2 c per bird per day. now
who knows how much each bird gets....so what we've done is put out several piles
of soybean meal with calcium - oyster shell. Each pile is probably a
pint. It's always gone the next day, so somebody is eating it!
High protein dry catfood was recommended as well, but that gets very
expensive very fast, and isn't as good overall as the soybean meal.
Also, table scraps. Any and all. They are composting machines.
They haven't moral scruples. I buy a small baked chicken at the
store for my use, (husband hates chickenmeat) for soup, and this goes on down to
the dogs and cats.
Then, the boiled chicken skeleton with a tiny bit of meat left on
it is broken up for the chickens. Every Little Bit is gone.
They do good work on other kinds of meats and bones as well.
Michele

Like, should I be feeding them something that wild varmints would eat (;-( E. E. "Mitch" Mitchamore www.hillcountrynatives.net |
