When I was looking for engineering jobs, a recruiter told me that most companies spent the first year teaching their new-hires everything they didn't learn in college. I was lucky, having worked in various related jobs all through college, so I went straight into a productive position, but I saw people coming in with a diploma and nothing else--no earthly idea what would be expected of them or how to do it. Some of them probably took more than a year to figure it out, lol.
