Interestingly enough, it's not the processed food that will increase in price first. Because the ingredients are the least of the value of the final package, and the price is high per unit volume (compared with primary food), there is a lot more give in the price. Take cola for example. Almost pure profit. Today I saw some in the supermarket cheaper than I have ever seen it.

It is, as we have seen discussed here for some time, those items that have slim margins and cost a lot to transport, that will increase in price fastest. Primary products. Fresh fruit and veges. Meat. Dairy.

The good news is that these are thing things that are most available to us as home-grown. The bad news is that for those that still have to buy them, they are the most healthy.

Which brings us back to a problem that is endemic amongst western nations, I am sure. That is, the poorest get to eat the worst food.

That's not enough folks, not nearly enough. Food is not coming back

I'm glad to see that many people are apparently starting to grow
their own, but dismayed at the number who are still buying processed foods.

One person in the article said coupons weren't much help. That's how
the food manufacturers are trying to keep up the sale of processed
foods, by offering good coupon deals.

It is possible to do very very well with coupons. My daughter is one
of those people who can go to the checkout with a cart full of food
(and real food, not just junk) and a fistful of coupons, and not pay
a cent for the food. But she does that by spending several hours
every day tracking coupons and putting deals together. Most people
don't have the time or patience for it, including me. There are some
amazing deals out there, but they're not for the casual coupon user
(here's a blog entry about
it--http://life-as-a-spectator-sport.com/2008/07/and-then-it-spit-out-another-coupon.html)
