In San Diego Asian food markets are one of the best places to buy both meat
and produce. This based both on price and quality (as measured by
freshness). Most of these stores appear to be owned and operated by
Vietnamese immigrants. Their Asian clientele have high standards and just
won't buy poor quality, expensive food.

Good points. One thing I've found, though, is that Hispanic markets,
even the small ones in the inner cities, tend to have far more fresh
produce, meat, fish and seafood than the other convenience stores,
because their patrons expect to find those things for sale. In some
neighborhoods, there are multiple places within walking distance to
find fresh food. Unfortunately, those stores tend to be concentrated
in areas with a sizable Hispanic and/or Asian population. The
African-American neighborhoods don't have these same resources, even
when the stores in those neighborhoods are Asian owned (seldom
Hispanic owned). And as more and more Hispanic kids are eating in
American school cafeterias and watching American tv, their food
choices are shifting away from the fresh live food their parents preferred.
