Soil Improvement Tip from my applications of
Permaculture:

I have had great success with cardboard mulch. With
this mantra of "Covering the Soil" I find that a quick
and long-lasting solution, albeit Ugly. The plastic
tapes and labels should be removed, first, and the
whole sheets pinned in place.

I also have found that slugs are easier to control,
although still a serious problem in this moist
maritime climate. I recycle disposable soda bottle
halves to sprout the seeds, giving the first leaves a
bit of time protected from mice and slugs. These fit
into holes cut thru the cardboard mulch - seedlings
are even better.

The cardboard has been especially welcome in the
greenhouse, and it definitely retains moisture there.
Weed control is a snap, especially if I use some
stones to flatten out the edges.

Regards,
Zack
