Absolutely right! The useful contribution of
Permaculture is as a design overview of systems. If you're talking farms,
a Permaculture approach might help you decide where to place certain
activities, and provide a philosophical basis for what you're doing. In
the same manner, Holistic Management might help you to make decisions.
These big "umbrella" concepts should not be taken to address all issues.
As they say in Holistic Management, " You still have to decide what to do after
breakfast".
In Permaculture terms, your kitchen garden would be
in zone 1, by the house. Your raised bed (or not; Ken) production areas
would be in zone 2, a little further out, and your edible forest would be in
zone 3, still further out; maybe in an odd corner. In all areas you would
be conscious of weather patterns, microclimates, water management, fire danger,
etc. However, having done all that high-level planning, you still need to
get your hands in the dirt and grow something to eat.
