I had heard/read somewhere, pertaining to fence posts I believe, that if you
char wood that's going to be in contact with soil that it doesn't rot (or rot
as fast). I'd be interested in hearing whether this has any validity.

Another alternative is old (recycled) wood, rather than wood treated
with arsenates. See http://attra.ncat.org/attra-pub/lumber.html
which also has links to other resources, such as the longevity of
different species of wood. It also has a recipe for a wood
preservative you can make.
