Unless I've forgotten something somewhere . . . The chared surface of wood and the black crispy stuff that cakes up on your wood stove is a type of creosote.

Another alternative is old (recycled) wood, rather than wood treated
with arsenates. See http://attra.ncat.org/attra-pub/lumber.html
which also has links to other resources, such as the longevity of
different species of wood. It also has a recipe for a wood
preservative you can make.
