Yes they are.  Although this winter my brother is planting clover on the main garden spot for his bees as much as anything.

The plastic I was talking about isn't what most people use.  That stuff is terrible and gets shredded too easily.  I live near one of the companies that makes the stuff body bags are made from.  When I need to kill off seeds I use that stuff and then roll it back up, we use it for a lot of things actually because it is so durable.
