An aphid infestation is always a marker that your levels of available N
are too high. Aphids are better than a soil test at detecting this
problem.

Also, in the 1970s or very early 1980s, researchers in Germany did trials
that established the difference in pest incidence between plants
fertilized with immediately available nutrients and those that had to be
broken down and made available by soil processes over the season. IFOAM
published this work, so I imagine you can find it somewhere on line. It's
no different from what you already know and understand, but you might like
to look at the study.
