With regards to the Prius, it's more practical than you might think. It has a fairly large cargo area under the hatch (or trunk, for 2001-2003).

You can buy a receiver hitch for one inexpensively (http://www.coastaletech.com/04hitch.htm), and then install a hitch mounted cargo carrier - there are several kinds. It's not intended to pull a trailer of course, but it's also great for hauling bicycles. And since the car has a full size back seat, you can load that area up too.

The trunk on the 2002 is not tiny either. Before I bought my receiver hitch, I traveled with my bicycle in there (wheels removed) and still had room for suitcases.
