Apparently sending this fairly small message in HTML format (so I
could bold the "250-AUTH PLAIN LOGIN" line) made it too large for
mailman to accept. I guess
I should know better. here it is in plain text format so the archives
can get it.

Cheers,
Tanner

I assume this is your mail server? mail.stanbriggs.com? If so, then
looking at your configuration remotely I see this:

telnet mail.stanbriggs.com 25

Note that you're advertising that you support both PLAIN and LOGIN.
If you only want to support one of them, turn the other one off. I
believe Thunderbird can use LOGIN for SMTP but will select PLAIN first
if it is supported.

Other than that, I wash my hands with sendmail. I could tell you how
to do this in postfix, but not having used sendmail in over 10 years I
wouldn't know where to begin. Steven Campeon's e-mail is probably a
better bet for you. Good luck.

Cheers,
Tanner

Ah-ha! I sense a disconnect here.
-> disconnect reconnecting ...

Ok, you mentioned IMAP and dovecot but then confused me by mentioning
sending e-mail. I was
confused because IMAP and dovecot don't have anything at all do to with
sending of e-mail.
Sending e-mail, also known as SMTP, is handled by a MTA (Mail Transport
Agent) which
in your case I'm going to guess will either be postfix or sendmail (but
could possibly be
exim too). The first question I have is this: have you configured your MTA
to allow
authenticated relaying? If you haven't, then it won't work at all. If you
have, continue
below to my questions:
-> you are correct. this is an MTA issue (which is sendmail, by the way).
-> and i apologize for repeatedly mentioning this but both outlook and
evolution are working with this server configuration and with what appear to be
awfully darn close client configurations.

Under the "Tools"->Account Settings menu again, select the "Outgoing Server
(SMTP)"
line in the left column, then select server on the right and click the
"Edit" button. Now,

1. Are "Use name and password" selected?
-> yes. and my account name is present.
2. What do you have for "Use secure connection"?
-> i have 'No' selected
3. What is the port?
-> the port is '25'.

This should help us answer why things aren't working.
