Stan,
As I explained in response to your message on the TriLUG
list, LOGIN and PLAIN are _exactly the same_. That's
why you can't change it. Also, you should never have
to bother with the prefs.js file. Everything can be done from
the account setup.
So, let me ask a few questions to see if we can figure out
what's wrong with the login.
1. What is the exact error message you're getting from Thunderbird?
2. Any error messages on the dovecot side?
3. Are you using SSL?
4. What port is your IMAP server on? (143 is the normal or starttls
one and 993 is the ssl one)
5. Under the Thunderbird menu "Tools"->"Accounts"->(the account in
question)->Server Settings, what values do you have under "Security
Settings" for "Use secure connection" and "Use secure authentication"?
And on that screen, what does the "Port" say?
Cheers,
Tanner

all/any,
are there any hardcore thunderbird users out there?
i'm new to thunderbird and like what i see so far. well, except that i can't
send email from thunderbird. (my 'other' imap client [outlook]) works fine
with my dovecot imap server but, alas, thunderbird does not, yet. the short
question seems to be how do i get thunderbird to use the authentication
method 'LOGIN'. it seems to use 'PLAIN' and i can find nowhere to change it.
the prefs.js file does not seem to be very well documented. there appears to
a place there to set this value (auth_method) but no documentation as to
what to change it to.
anyone have any ideas?
thanks,
stan
p.s. oh, and merry christmas to all!
