Stan,

As I explained in response to your message on the TriLUG list, LOGIN and PLAIN are _exactly the same_.  That's why you can't change it.  Also, you should never have to bother with the prefs.js file.  Everything can be done from the account setup.

So, let me ask a few questions to see if we can figure out what's wrong with the login.

1. What is the exact error message you're getting from Thunderbird?

2. Any error messages on the dovecot side?

the message in /var/log/maillog is:

Dec 14 13:56:35 pb1 sm-mta[32022]: STARTTLS=server, relay=[199.72.20.170], version=TLSv1/SSLv3, verify=NOT, cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA, bits=256/256 Dec 14 13:56:36 pb1 sm-mta[32022]: AUTH=server, relay=[199.72.20.170], authid=stan_sb, mech=PLAIN, bits=0 Dec 14 13:56:36 pb1 sm-mta[32022]: kBEIuX3o032022: ruleset=check_rcpt, arg1=<stan AT itsco.com>, relay=[199.72.20.170], reject=550 5.7.1 <stan AT itsco.com>... Relaying denied. IP name lookup failed [199.72.20.170]

-> note that i was able add the address that the thunderbird client is operating inside of to relay-domains and get this to work but a) that is specifically what i don't want to do [add the address for each different location that i come in from] and b) i'm connecting to this same imap server from outlook (on this desktop) and evolution (desktop at home) and they both work fine.

3. Are you using SSL?

no, the outgoing smtp server is set to not do so. the incoming server is set to do so.

4. What port is your IMAP server on? (143 is the normal or starttls one and 993 is the ssl one)

my imap server is open on both, right now.

5. Under the Thunderbird menu "Tools"->"Accounts"->(the account in question)->Server Settings, what values do you have under "Security Settings" for "Use secure connection" and "Use secure authentication"?

'SSL' is selected. 'Use secure authentication' is not.

And on that screen, what does the "Port" say?

on this screen it says '993'.

Cheers,
Tanner
