however, using the --erase option will force also a block-copy from the source drive, which can only be performed if the source drive can be unmounted. which the boot volume cannot.
I fail to see from that how the lack of one will result in the drive being unbootable, as well as stand by the fact that I have asr'd a running volume to duplicate it, and then rebooted from that duplicate. The only step needed was to use either bless or the Startup Disk prefpane to bless the new volume.

--wrapper forces an HFS wrapper to be created on the
tar get volume if the --erase option is used. Nor mally the creation
of a wrapper depends on certain filesystem variables. --wrapper is
ignored if --erase is not used.
