Most of the issue with using hydrogen as a fuel is that it is
very explosive. I don't think it would work as a torch well in
normal circumstances, perhaps there is technology that would
allow it though.
It looked to me like the main thing the guy had invented
was a very efficient way to direct the hydrogen and oxygen
gasses. As you say, done incorrectly, burning hydrogen
can have drastic results. Just ask the Hindenberg passengers!
The video showed the tip of the torch as cool to the touch.
To do that you'd have to have the burning action happening
away from the end of the torch which could probably be done
by judicious direction of H2 and O streams so they combine
just in front of the tip. Or at least that sounds about right. :-)
Acetylene is a great gas for welding applications
since it can be burned with great control. It is non toxic
according to the MSDS <http://www.iigas.com/acetylene_msds.htm>
Thanks for the correction! Interesting to see that
acetylene has been used as an "anesthetic". (I wonder
if they actually meant anesthesia?) That would be
freaky!
Cheers,
Tanner
