In MI when I visited as a youngster (circa 1962). my cousins used to laugh when we said "soda." To the Northern MI cousins it was clearly & rightly "pop.."

Yeah, I mostly hear 'sody pop' at family reunions from my dad's generation... the ones that stayed in the mountains instead of moving
to the cities. Hey.... Tony, have you been hitting on my cousin
again? I done told you she's mine.

Ah...that explains it. I grew up in the foothills of the Appalachians (SE Ohio), so that must be where I picked up "sodapop".
