i don't really find it slower on my machines. YMMV. though weighing it down with too many extensions can make it take longer to launch.
tony, you may want to play around with the nglayout.initialpaint.delay value. depending on your system and net connection, something between 30 and 100 is probably a more optimized value.
a zero setting gets the rendering going right away, but as more bits arrive it has to repaint. with it set too low you get the immediate satisfaction of seeing /something/, but total page rendering times rise and you may see a bit of jerky reflow of page elements. FWIW.
