If you've read Crooked Timber or Eschaton I'm sure you've noted that
comments and trackbacks are the primary social component there. It may
not be as integrated as LJ, but on the plus side, you don't have to
have a LJ account to contribute fully to those other sites.

Blogspot and typepad both allow comments and trackbacks, as I'm sure
do other hosted services. They both allow you to have your own domain
if you wish and still use their site building tools, and blogspot
offers a free, ad-supported domain if you wish to go that route.
