About This Mac is where I got the info to begin with, so, yeah, it's
an old OS X. Something called "Classic" automatically runs when
clicking the update/installer, which (I gather) somehow puts the
system into OS 9x mode. But then it goes no further. (The site
explains that the HP updated driver also works on OS 9, so I *assumed*
that it was doing the infamous Mac "making it work for you" gig.)
It's looking to classic because the driver runs on 10.1 or better or OS 9...
As I'm not the owner of the Mac, I hesitate to do a lot to/with this
system. Would an old G4 (256MB RAM) be able to run an updated OS X?
How much would that cost? ~B
It will run fine on 10.2 or 10.3. I've seen upgrade discs for as low as $29 for 10.2 from Other World Computing..

OK. I'm not going to suggest that Mom put out $130 right now. I'll tell her
that's the diagnosis, and let it go.
She says she thinks that the appropriate driver for the HP is still in the
Mac, somewhere. Maybe it needs to go into Classic mode then maybe I can find
the printer. I don't want to be the over-the-top cook who spoils the brew.
(Mom has a Mac guru who's currently overwhelmed with her day job. Mom's three
young-teen grandchildren -- not here right now -- also do things on that
machine. All of them know more about the Macintosh than I. The upgrade to OS
X, for example, happened recently via grandchildren. I think. It was there
all along, Mom says, but she had to stay with v9 until recently since her
version of MS Word wouldn't work on v10.)
The OS 9 driver is probably still in there, only problem is it doesn't help with OS X... Maybe boot into OS 9 and try the printer...
