According to Boethius it was Plato's opinion that "commonwealths would
be blessed if they should be ruled by philosophers or if their rulers
should happen to have studied philosophy." Is that what you mean by
elitist intellectual side? I certainly understand why people don't
agree with my liberal ideas. I break it down into four things,
1. Lack of quality education
2. Lack of life experience including interaction with people of other
backgrounds and cultures causing a lack of caring about one's fellow
man due to the misunderstanding that the well being of the whole is
not related to the well being of the few. run-on sentences are cool.
3. General stupidity caused by mental retardation or upbringing
4. Educated well thought out but incorrect philosophy

I would say that most of the time it is one of the first three. Now
the real question is "Can conservatives figure out why their policies
don't work and why they smell so bad?"

As long as we're flaming. Oh wait, meaningful discussion... sorry.
