You are part way to identifying an assault rifle--one which is capable of
selective or automatic fire, and fires an intermediate sized cartridge
(intermediate between the size of a pistol and a rifle cartridge). The first
assault rifle, the Sturmgewehr-44 (StG. 44), was developed in Germany during
WWII.
