Something weird and scary today...

I pick up line 1 to call Caelan's day care to check on him (yes, first day today, another story altogether). No dial tone. Huh? Line 2 is OK, so I call BellSouth to ask for a repair. They say "Oh, you're being switched over to MCI local today." I'm what? I didn't ask for that. Switch me back. "Oh, we can't do that since the work order is in process, you'll have to call MCI then call us back." Called MCI. They have no such record in their system. Curiouser and curiouser. I call BellSouth back -- they will not admit that they might have been hacked, but can restore service. Unfortunately, they may not be able to get the phone number back from MCI (or whoever is holding it, this is still a mystery) for 8 to 10 days!

Now, we did put in an order for Time Warner digital service last month, then changed our minds the next day and cancelled the order. We even made TW mail us a copy of the cancellation. I wonder if something in their system kicked it off anyway, and they are identifying themselves as MCI????

Another question I have is, why did we actually lose dial tone? Is that normal when one changes providers?

And a legal question -- is it illegal to switch you from one company to another without your say-so?

Thank goodness we have two phone lines, is all I can say. Maybe I'm overreacting due to being separated from my baby for the first time today... :)

Diana
