I had heard on the phone about the damage, and so was prepared, but it didn't really register until you see the scope of the damage. The pictures don't really do it justice, and I'm not sure why. I think its because the pictures only capture a small part of the field of vision, and when you're there there's destruction all around you. Or it could be looking at a picture of pile of debris is quite different than having to clean it up :-)

Yeah. Eastern North Carolina was hit extremely hard, especially
that area. Janell and I spent this past weekend in Washington
and Tyrell Counties doing emergency ham radio communications
for shelters, receiving centers, distribution centers, first
aid stations and emergency operations centers. You can see the
pictures we took here:

As far as I know, some of these areas still need volunteers to
help out. If you've got some extra time, please consider helping
out. Unfortunately, I don't remember any of the links where I
saw that, but a small amount of web searching should find it.
I'd suggest starting with NC state government pages.
