If you are Linux savvy, you could try out MythTV, www.mythtv.org...

I love it, it is allot more that a DVR. It also has a music app,
gallery, video (for recorded videos), weather, DVD player, Mame for
playing games, and a web interface... And will work in a distributed
environment, server+client+client+client... you get the picture.
